How to Attract Quality Drivers

The economy is improving, and so is the trucking forecast. This is great news for our industry, however, that is not the only thing that is increasing. Driver turnover is once again on the rise, and becoming a huge concern for large and small truckload fleets alike.

The Fact Is...

The American Trucking Association (ATA) attributes the driver turnover to the improving economy and on-going competition for experienced drivers. "Our (Trucking Activity Report) data shows that competition for drivers across the industry remains high...", stated Bob Costello, ATA Chief Economist. This data is reflecting a 7% increase of quarterly turnover for large truckload fleets, and 6% at smaller truckload fleets in the first quarter of 2013. "If the economy continues to improve as we expect it to, we'll see competition for drivers intensify, which will increase...the turnover rate and exacerbate the driver shortage...", said Costello.

The Challenge Is...

The challenge carriers face is the retention of drivers already employed, as well as attracting experienced and responsible drivers to their operation. Finding out what the drivers want is the key to success. Simply increasing your recruiting efforts will not solve the driver turn-over problem, it will only increase your new-hire roster and costs. An interesting study conducted by the Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute, estimated that the average cost of driver turnover is about $8,000. That is a high price that can be avoided by adopting some strategies to attract and keep quality drivers.

One way that trucking companies have found success with driver satisfaction is to provide drivers with a better work environment through mobile communication.
